Hundreds of bee species face imminent extinction

Almost ten percent of Europe’s nearly 2,000 bee species are
threatened with extinction, according to the latest report by the
International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

The European Red List of Bees includes information on all 1,965
wild bee species in Europe, including their status, distribution,
population trends and threats. The latest edition has just been
published, and it classes 9.2 percent as threatened with
extinction, with a further 5.2 percent considered likely to be
threatened in the future. Twenty five percent of bumblebee species
are threatened.
