<\/h2>\n<\/h2>\nColby Moore, a security expert from security firm Synack, will present in a talk at the next Black Hat Conference<\/a> how to hack satellite tracking technology by using a $1,000 device made of off the shelf components.<\/p>\n The possible consequences are serious if we consider that satellite tracking technology is practically used in every industry, including cargo shipment and themilitary.<\/p>\n Moore focused its analysis on GlobalStar<\/a> systems, the vendor provides satellite tracking devices<\/a> to its customers that want to track their assets. The GlobalStar\u00a0satellite tracking devices can also be used to monitor industrial critical infrastructure such as pipelines, or to track hikers and other adventurers who use GlobalStar\u2019s consumer tracker called \u201cSpot<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Moore will demonstrate that communications between GlobalStar<\/a>\u00a0tracker devices and its constellation of satellites is not secure and open to cyber attacks, hackers, in fact, can intercept data transferred and spoof\u00a0the signal sent to the satellites.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re only at the tip of the iceberg for the implications around this,\u201d Moore told Motherboard<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s really critical that these companies start taking security seriously.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Moore sustain that the company GlobalStar isn\u2019t taking security seriously and it isn\u2019t protecting its customers.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s really critical that these companies start taking security seriously.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n GlobalStar\u00a0satellite tracking devices are used for various purposes, they can be used to monitor industrial critical infrastructure<\/a> such as pipelines, or to track adventurers.<\/p>\n Moore pointed out that the entire family of devices provided by GlobalStart relies on the flawed technology, known as the Simplex<\/a> data network, which is used to transmit data between the tracking devices and the satellites.<\/p>\n The researcher made a reverse engineering of the protocol discovering that it is easy to intercept communication data in transit.\u00a0Moore has built device composed of a satellite antenna<\/a>, a software defined radio transceiver<\/a>, and an amplifier<\/a>, that allows him to capture data sent by GlobalStar transmitters to the satellites.<\/p>\n The device allows attackers to see the position of every satellite tracker, and can even hijack and spoof the data, tricking the trackers and making them believe to be in a different location.<\/p>\n The device cost only around $1,000, Moore plans to release the hardware specifications as well as the code he developed at the\u00a0Black Hat.<\/a><\/p>\n The repercussions on security could be serious, as explained by the MotherBoard.<\/p>\n \u201cFor example, a criminal could track a vehicle, say an armored car, for days to learn its regular path. The intercepted data doesn\u2019t reveal what kind of vehicle a tracker is installed on, but regular patterns might give that away\u2014think of a vehicle that constantly goes between banks or diamond\u00a0<\/em>shops.\u201d wrote Lorenzo Bicchierai from MotherBoard.<\/em><\/p>\n At that point, the criminal could hijack it, disable the satellite transmitter, and use another transmitter to show to the company that the armored car is on its regular track \u201cbut in reality you\u2019re hijacking it and taking it somewhere else,\u201d Moore said.<\/em><\/p>\n Currently the device is able to track devices\u00a0in a range of \u201cseveral miles\u201d, future improvements will allow Moore\u00a0to extend the range up to 2,000 miles.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the future I\u2019ll be able to see 2,000 miles around me for every base station I set up,\u201d explained Moore<\/em>.<\/p>\n Moore reported the flaws to GlobalStar\u00a0more than six months ago without receiving any reply.<\/p>\n The bad news for GlobalStar\u2019s customers is that it is likely the firmware on the device could not be updated so the company would have to recall them.<\/p>\n The\u00a0GlobalStar\u00a0immediately replied to the claims, a spokesperson for GlobalStar\u00a0released the following statement via email:<\/p>\n \u201cengineers would know quickly if any person or entity was hacking our system in a material way, and this type of situation has never been an issue to date.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Moore doesn\u2019t believe the explanation provided by the company\u2019s spokesman.<\/p>\n \u201cIts very possible that\u00a0<\/em>GlobalStar\u00a0does have internal monitoring mechanisms,\u201d he said in an email. \u201cBut due to the nature of the flaws I have discovered, I believe it would be impossible to monitor if someone is intercepting data and using it for malicious purposes.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n I can’t\u00a0wait for the talk \u2026<\/p>\n ###<\/p>\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n The post Hacking Satellite Tracking Systems for $1000<\/a> appeared first on h+ Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A security researcher demonstrated how to hack a satellite tracking technology with a $1,000 device made of off the shelf components.
