Video Friday: Melanie Swan on Introduction to Ethics of Perception in Nanocognition

[This deep and erudite presentation from futurist and biotechnologist Melanie Swan is  well worth your time]

What kinds of ethics should nanorobotic cognitive aids have? Cognitive nanorobots, an analog to medical nanorobots, could have applications in cognitive enhancement and perceptual aid such as bias reduction, memory management (access, suppression), and personalized ethics optimization. It is important to consider what kinds of ethics modules may be appropriate for inclusion in cognitive nanorobots. A number of core philosophical questions arise such as the possibility and desirability of knowing a true and objective reality, and selecting different realities. The philosophy of Bergson and Deleuze is used to investigate and propose an ethics of perception.

Labour MPs: we’ll ensure you control your data

In 2011, a third of all divorce proceedings in America contained
reference to Facebook. Just seven years after its launch, and
less than five after it became open to the public, social media and
the material it created had altered forever that most basic of
human relationships. Now so ubiquitous, it is sometimes hard to
remember that the world wide web is only 25-years-old —
a platform for information sharing and communicating that has
transformed our lives in ways our parents, and indeed many of us
growing up, could not have imagined.

Fine-scale genetic map shows UK’s secret histories

Data collected by the Wellcome Trust has been used by
researchers at Oxford University to create the first fine-scale
genetic map of the UK. As part of a study published
in Nature, the researchers discovered that there is
no single Celtic genetic group in the UK — and in fact people from
Celtic areas of the UK are among the most different to each other
genetically.

The Celtic parts of the UK are defined as Scotland, Northern
Ireland, Wales and Cornwall. The dividing line that runs between
Cornwall and Devon showed that each county has its own genetic
group and that they are separated almost exactly by the county
border.

Touch: the last frontier of sense science

Touch, says David Linden, is something we take for
granted. “It’s very hard to imagine it gone,” he tells WIRED.co.uk.
“You can imagine what it’s like to be blind or deaf, or have no
sense of smell, but there’s no way to turn off touch”.

Touch might not be an obvious starting point for
Linden, who is a professor of neuroscience at the John Hopkins
University, studying learning and memory. But according to the
professor, “the story of the neuroscience underlying touch has yet
to be told”. Pointing to the advances made in touch research over
the last 20 years, Linden tells us that his own interest in the
topic was sparked over lunch by colleagues working in the School
of Medicine.

Trans-humanism: The Consumption of Man – Part II

In the ultimate trans-humanist world, Man, or at least some men, will be able to control every aspect of living and be ‘free’ from the constraints of nature. Such men, thus, seek to control every aspect of our lives. To do this they must divide and conquer, and the most basic divide and conquer is the destruction of the family unit.

A simple guide to GCHQ’s hacking powers

We now know a lot more about GCHQ’s hacking operations
— and the details haven’t come from Edward Snowden. New
documents released by the government
and privacy advocates have given us the first official
glimpse of how GCHQ operates, with its hacking and encryption
weakening operations confirmed for the first time.

SpaceX frees photos of private spaceflight history

Commercial spaceflight pioneer SpaceX has bowed to
public pressure to loosen its grip on images that it’s taken in
space.

The company has released more than 100 photos under a Creative
Commons license, which permits others to use them for
non-commercial purposes and create derivative works, as long as
SpaceX is given attribution.
