Why I support Humanity+: Transhumanism is Wisdom

kiko suarez

I am often heard saying that humans must really earn the “sapiens” label, as a criticism to all the atrocities and ethically deplorable choices we sometimes make both individually and in groups.

We need to be critical in order to improve, as long as criticism is both given and taken as a constructive way to get to a better place. I must admit, it took me some time to understand criticism as feedback rather than an attack. It is also true that taking an overly critical view of the status quo may not necessarily be perceived by others as an attempt to construct, but to destruct. I don’t know about you, but I personally dislike the concept of “destruction”. What I like the most is thoughtful constructive action, with a good dose of thoughtful constructive criticism (given and taken), so we can keep adding substantive blocks of progress to the way we live and enjoy the gift of life.

There is an organization out there, Humanity+ (http://www.humanityplus.org) that has taken this approach of “thoughtful constructive action” and “thoughtful constructive criticism” with regard to its mission, elevating the human condition.  Really?  Wait, what?  There is a group of people out there who are volunteering their time and offering their experiences in a myriad of disciplines and professions to help elevate the human condition?  I wanted to know more about it.

Transhumanism, the philosophy that Humanity+ embraces and promotes, is another way to say “elevating the human condition”.  Humanity+ has the credibility and the ability to discuss how humans can ethically influence our own evolution so we can become and be “better humans”.  I don’t think there’s a limit to how “better” you or I can be, is it?  The incredible biological advantage that intelligent species like “sapiens sapiens”  have is that we can consciously impact our own destiny, and we are at a point in our evolution were we can envision alternative futures , and work towards the most favorable ones by putting our resources and developing the technologies necessary to get there safely.

Everybody recognizes how quickly things go now. My parents passed many years ago, but I remember my dad having issues with the concept of an ATM, when he needed “the human touch”.  What I love about Humanity+ is that they envision a future where humans can be “better humans” (and that includes making this planet more livable, in conjunction with ecosystems and their living species), where technology continues to evolve in ethical ways, and where each one of us will have choices that were not available to us before.

I was cleaning our basement with my wife the other day, and we had the choice to get rid of CDs because most music it’s all available cloud-based. We also realized, however, all the electronic junk we had accumulated that was not useful anymore and would probably go to waste. One of my favorite alternative futures is “zero waste in any habitable planet” (including Earth, of course, that’s where everything starts!).  More importantly, I want to think about a preferred future where we defeated all known illnesses (including death which I believe is an illness), and where every person has a chance to reach her maximum potential.

Idealistic? Of course.  Questionable? We must engage in thoughtful constructive criticism, so everything should be open for questions. Feasible?  I believe so, only if we,“sapiens sapiens”, want to!  Scary?  Only if we don’t have organizations like Humanity+ that creates the space to thoughtfully co-create regardless of nationality, gender, nationality, race or even language (since there are local chapters worldwide).

My doctoral research on wisdom revealed that “those considered wise” by others operated from an augmented personal and professional platform, where their internal “wisdom system” has been nurtured, is fully charged and engages dynamically with the environment to provide themselves and those around them a unique synthesized perspective of the world that we are able recognize when we ask them for advice.  I posit that each one of us has our own “wisdom system” that leads us to our higher purpose of flourishing for self and others. In other words, I always say that “we are born to be wise”.  In those alternative futures, I definitely see an “elevated version” of humanity, individually and collectively, finally driven by that urge to flourish and improve our human condition.

There are many challenges ahead of us, but I always err on the side of optimism and progress. We are born to be wise and Humanity+ has that spirit, the belief that humans are bound to become and be “better humans”.  Whether you live by this or that political ideology, this or that religious faith, this or that nationality, you and I are “sapiens sapiens”, and we can work to ensure that we and those around us, and our future generations continue to elevate the human condition. The future is literally something we make, and I like to be part of an organization like Humanity+ where the end game is to become and be “better humans”.

Be wise.

The Turning Point?

Centuries never immediately acquire a character that can reward them with a right spot in history. Thus the 20th century did not really start until 1914. Will the 21st century be labeled as “the 2015 century”? Without wishing to predict the future, which remains by definition unpredictable, we can try to look at today’s events, which in turn, can help …

Ash – The World Tree

As we continue our journey with the sacred trees of this land, we come to the much revered tree of knowledge and world tree: the Ash. With its far reaching, protective branches touching the heavens and roots holding deeply into the earth, the Ash has long been seen as the axis mundi, or world tree, and was the bridge that connected the shamanic travellers with the many worlds.

High arsenic levels in 21 districts

GUWAHATI – In Assam, groundwater in 21 districts has so far been found contaminated with high amounts of arsenic, while the groundwater of nine districts has been found to be contaminated with high amounts of fluoride.

Experts engaged in the fight against fluorosis and arsenicosis, maintain that information at the micro level of fluoride and arsenic contamination of groundwaters is very scarce.

Disclosing this, Dr Sundar Rajan Krishnan, executive director of the Anand, Gujarat-based India Natural Resource Economics and Management (INREM) Foundation and Safa Fanaian from the Hyderabad-based SaciWaters told this correspondent that an effort has been made to evolve a communication strategy to make the people at the grassroots level aware of the adverse impacts of fluoride and arsenic contamination of groundwater. This is expected to result in the evolution of a strategy to eradicate the menaces of fluorosis and arsenicosis.

Dr Krishnan is looking after the activities of the INREM Foundation’s Fluoride Action Network, while Safa Fanaian is coordinating the activities of SaciWaters’ Arsenic Knowledge and Action Network. These two networks are engaged in generating awareness on water quality-related issues, and, more particularly on fluoride and arsenic contamination-related issues, all over the country. They are also engaged in developing strategies to check both fluorosis and aresnicosis.

It needs mention here that INREM Foundation, supported by the Tata Trust and the Bangaluru-based Arghyam, has scripted a success story in checking the spread of fluorosis and curing the victims of this dreaded disease in Jhabua district of Western Madhya Pradesh by making safe drinking water available and providing locally available low-cost nutritious food items to the people.

Both Dr Krishnan and Fanaian visited the city in connection with a three-day workshop jointly organised by the INREM Foundation and the SaciWaters from March 10. The workshop was organised to generate awareness of the leading social activists, bureaucrats as well as doctors of the State Government on the water quality-related issues and to prepare them for a joint venture to eradicate Fluorosis and Arsenicosis.

State’s nine districts, which have so far reported presence of fluoride in their groundwaters are — Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Dhubri, Barpeta, Karimganj, Golaghat, Sonitpur, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup. Now around 1.5 million people of the State are affected by fluoride contamination of groundwaters, Paul apprised.

Earth has crossed 4 out of 9 planetary boundaries for hospitable life

earthsun

Some of us are more surprised than others about this news. How surprised you are is likely determined by how informed you are, so if you haven’t been keeping up with any of this: prepare to hold onto your seat. According to a new study from Johan Rockström et al at McGill University: 4 out of 9 planetary systems necessary for sustained life on this planet have been already been crossed.

Nine planetary boundaries

  1. Climate change
  2. Change in biosphere integrity (biodiversity loss and species extinction)
  3. Stratospheric ozone depletion
  4. Ocean acidification
  5. Biogeochemical flows (phosphorus and nitrogen cycles)
  6. Land-system change (for example deforestation)
  7. Freshwater use
  8. Atmospheric aerosol loading (microscopic particles in the atmosphere that affect climate and living organisms)
  9. Introduction of novel entities (e.g. organic pollutants, radioactive materials, nanomaterials, and micro-plastics).

So, which have we crossed and where are we still doing ok? How do we determine our success, and where are the “boundaries” between maintaining a viable biosphere and falling into a global extinction vortex?

9limits

The problem with environmental boundaries is they don’t work linearly, which is hard for people to really understand. Once they are crossed, getting back to the original state takes a much more energy than it took to first change states. One of my favorite diagrams for explaining this concept of “stable states” is this diagram from Staudinger et al’s 2013 multi-agency climate and environmental assessment.

Staudinger et al, 2012. Technical Input to the. 2013 National Climate Assessment.

Staudinger et al, 2012. Technical Input to the. 2013 National Climate Assessment.

As you can see, specific ecosystem states display a level of “resilience” towards change: allowing factors to shift around within a certain frame while the system remains relatively stable… until a point. Past a certain point, the system can shift states, and returning to the original state requires returning the system to a level deep within the initial state.

The fact is that we are facing intense ecological problems, with research indicating we are standing on the edge of a global biosphere shift, and meanwhile most people don’t understand enough of what is going on to understand how dire our situation is, or how much effort would be appropriate to invest in correcting our situation. The answer is that we should put everything we have behind preserving biodiversity and preventing a biosphere collapse: our survival likely depends on it.

Infant formula shipment blocked despite ’1080-free’ deal

Note from Fluoride Action Network:
1080 is the common name of a highly toxic pesticide called Sodium fluoroacetate. NZ aerially sprays 1080 to kill possums throughout the country. This is its molecular formula:
1080

The Government has given an assurance that up to $15 million of New Zealand baby formula on its way to China, won’t be held up for lack of a “1080-free” certificate.

But exporters have accused the Government of “game-playing” over a shipment already halted at a Shanghai port, even though it was sent before an agreed time frame.

Last Tuesday it was revealed Fonterra and Federated Farmers had received threatening letters last November, that included baby formula samples laced with a lethal dose of 1080 poison.

The letters threatened to contaminate infant formula if New Zealand did not stop using the poison for forest pest control by the end of this month.

Authorities kept the threat quiet for four months, to allow police to investigate and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to implement a testing regime before it had to alert key New Zealand’s trading partners.

On March 10 – the day the public was made aware of the threat – China’s Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (Aqsiq) announced all infant milk formula shipped from New Zealand since that date, required a 1080-free certificate.

MPI deputy director-general Scott Gallacher said $15 million worth of milk products on their way to China would arrive at the border with the correct certification.

“What we got on Friday was the approval and confirmation from Aqsiq of the language and templated format of the certificates they’re looking for MPI to sign off on,” he said.

“The requirement for those certificates have applied to all exports from after the 10th of March, which means any exports that left the country prior to that, our understanding is that they don’t require this stuff.”

Products exported since March 10, would still be on the water and would probably not have arrived at the Chinese border yet, Gallacher said.

But they would arrive with the relevant certification to pass into the Chinese market.

As well as the certificate from MPI, there would also be a certificate of analysis from the laboratory that carried out the test, confirming the products’ 1080-free status.

That however, did not help a full shipment of product shipped in February that exporters claim was held at the border late last week, because of the 1080 threat.

Infant Formula Exporters’ Association chairman Michael Barnett said a shipment that left New Zealand in February was stopped by Chinese authorities last Friday.

“About three or four days before the shipment arrived, we had the opportunity to do a pre-clearance of all the documents,” he said.

“And when they presented their documents, the Chinese said they would probably want to test for sodium fluoroacetate [1080].”

Barnett said the exporters concerned were still waiting on the outcome of that process.

But it was frustrating MPI did not seem to accept the shipment had been held up outside the agreed terms.

“We’ve gone out of our way to explain to them [MPI], and it seems to me we’re just dealing with people who don’t understand standard commercial transactions.

“To my mind it’s game-playing and it’s unnecessary.”

Gallacher said MPI had followed up with the manufacturers, exporters and Aqsiq.

“It has been confirmed that there shouldn’t have been any product encountering any difficulty as a result of this criminal blackmail threat, at any time last week,” he said.

“And so if there had been any product experiencing any difficulties from Aqsiq, they’ve indicated it wouldn’t have been because of this. But again we’re working with people to make sure we can get to the bottom of that information.”

Meanwhile, the police investigation was ongoing but it appeared little progress had been made.

Police were still trying to track down any missing 1080 poison as the hunt continued for the blackmailer.

Asked whether MPI had received any similar blackmail threats directed toward it, Prime Minister John Key said “no”.

He was not aware of any other copycat threats mailed to any other organisations.

As of Monday, about 70 people had contacted the police call line with information.

MPI had completed more than 52,000 batch tests on all milk products to be sold both domestically and offshore.

Why “ghetto pranks gone wrong” aren’t funny

pranksgonewrong

I see the videos routinely shared on Facebook, and usually I just ignore them. The reason I ignore them is because the videos are arranged so that the “actor” has a high probability of being assaulted: these people go into the hood to act like idiot assholes with the intention of getting hit. As a friend who put them on at his place yesterday said: they’re getting paid to get hit in the face.

So, as my friend asked, what’s wrong with them getting hit in the face for money? Doesn’t everybody win? No, not everybody wins. The people who are getting harassed on the street, the women who simply leave after he asks them if they want to help him “bust a nut,” the people whose pants he tries to pull up: they are not winning anything. They are being harassed.

I picked two videos to demonstrate what I mean… but these actually have a subtext. There are a lot more that don’t have any joke behind it, and I didn’t want to provide any hits to those on the even more tasteless side of the spectrum.

To put this in clearer terms: economically well-off white people go into poorer black neighborhoods with the intention of acting disrespectful towards people and hopefully getting a few good hits to the face for the viewers. The are technically harassing the citizens of those neighborhoods for profit. They not only wriling people up for literally no reason other than personal gain, but they are perpetuating negative white stereotypes in neighborhoods that don’t need that.

Some people don’t understand why the people get mad in these videos, but the creators are literally counting on this. They pick neighborhoods where there is enough crime that people are on edge, and where respect can be a commodity that determines whether people see you as a target or not.

The creators of the videos play on this: they disrespect these people in public, aware that in many cases they feel the need to violently defend their honor and punish this “stupid white kid” for being so disrespectful. Everyone watching secretly agrees that the kid is being disrespectful and stupid, so they laugh and are happy when he gets hit in the face. Except, that kid is getting paid for his hits in the face. The people he is disrespecting seem to get the really short straw: they get wriled up and are portrayed as “irrationally angry black people” in the videos.

Everybody except the people making these videos are losing. As I was being shown it again yesterday, I couldn’t help but think that they were setting race-relations in those neighborhoods back 10+ years. So, why are so many people sharing videos that, in reality, support negative stereotypes about both blacks and whites…. for profit? Well, because most people don’t think about it long enough to realize that these guys deliberately create situations where there is a high probability of violence.

Do you really think these people would make SO many videos, 5 minute strings of them getting hit and threatened, by accident? If this was the exception, why is it the vast majority of content in the vast majority of these videos? Is this really something we want to support, in any way? Shouldn’t we be working to battle racial stereotypes, instead of reinforcing them?

The Roswell Slides – A Brief Recap

Curt Collins, over at his blog has posted a recap of the Roswell Slides history. Rather than repost it here, or to rewrite it (with his permission, of course) I thought the easiest course would be to link to it. It is an interesting recap and covers what we know to this point. For those who wish to read it, you  can find it here:
And yes, we are all playing into the hands of those who will be presenting the information on May 5 in Mexico City, but what the heck, there are tens of thousands interested in this.
