Crickley Hill is an archaeologically significant and complex site on an prominent unploughed limestone spur of the North Cotswold escarpment with glorious views over the Vale of Gloucester.

Occupation dates from Neolithic times and continued at various periods until around 500 AD. The settlements were violently destroyed and put to fire on several occasions.

There is a Neolithic processional route which formed the basis of a religious site for at least 1000 years.

Extensive excavation work undertaken between 1969 to 1993 has revealed the violent nature of the occupations, site development throughout the occupation periods and religious knowledge possibly handed down by verbal tradition.

The settlements are some 200m walk from the visitors centre which has toilets and an interesting small exhibition room giving information on the park.

N.B. The site is exposed and has little shelter.

If the weather is fine there are two picnic areas for lunch, and numerous places on the site to sit and admire the view. Alternatively there is a pub, The Air Balloon, at the Birdlip Roundabout (about 5 minutes walk along the escarpment). The food is good but the pub can be crowded. As there are no refreshment facilities please bring your own tea, coffee etc.
