How the iPhone could play a role in genetics research

The iPhone could soon become a tool used in genetic studies, collecting DNA for the purpose of understanding disease and providing users with access to the results, Apple insiders believe.

A report in MIT’s Technology Review cites “people familiar with the plans” as sources for the rumours, which suggest that off the back of Research Kit, Apple will branch out into launching apps that will allow iPhone owners to get their DNA tested. If true, Apple would be just one of many technology companies and governments attempting to collate a massive database of sequenced genomes in order to understand more about the origins of disease.
