Many years ago I published a story about two studies that had been requested by newly elected President Jimmy Carter in 1977. The story was told by Daniel Sheehan, then General Counsel to the United States Jesuit National Headquarters – National Office of Social Ministry in Washington, D.C. He was approached by Marcia S. Smith who had been given the job of producing the reports – one on UFOs, and one on extraterrestrial intelligence.
Sheehan reported that he was asked by Smith “to participate in a highly classified major evaluation of the UFO phenomena, and extraterrestrial intelligence.”

When the story was first published James Oberg e-mailed me about the story. He expressed doubt but said that he would contact Marcia Smith about it as he knew her. (They both advised various elements of the United States on the Soviet space program)
Later he e-mailed me back to say he had talked to her and adding “Is she talking to you?”
I stated that she did not answer my e-mail and asked Oberg what she had said.
He replied, “Not what you said.”
I said that was fine. Fill me in as to what she said happened. At that point Oberg disappeared and no longer answered any of my queries. Well, he is back and he has added a bit to why he would not talk to me. Apparently he has chosen to cover for Marcia Smith. He stated.
“The reason for this silence was the fact that anything Oberg would say pro or con would simply increase the pressure on Marcia Smith to confirm or deny the Sheehan recollections. Smith had no intention to talk, and Oberg planned to do what he could to help his long time friend.”
The entire reply from Oberg posted on Facebook is posted below. Danny Sheehan is producing a series of books related to his career, and it is my understanding that the UFO part of his career will be covered. There is also a planned documentary on the Jimmy Carter sighting, and Carter’s handling of the UFO issue which will deal with these two highly classified reports produced for President Jimmy Carter.

“Asked what Smith had told him about the ETI and UFO studies, reportedly done by Smith in 1977, Oberg refused to say anything. A researcher out of Washington, D.C. wrote Oberg asking for smith’s phone number, but this request was also ignored. Oberg, always ready with an opinion about anything and everything, was forced to a position of complete silence.”
So you’re still sore I stopped writing to you when it seemed pointless, and that shows I’m the bad person in the relationship. Criminy.

You may here have perfectly illustrated why I stopped writing uselessly — you were perfectly capable of conjuring up imaginary motivations and thought processes in others, based on your own agenda. Yeah, it all comes back to me now.
