By kind permission of the Honourable Mrs Jane Clark this will be our second visit to this unique, exceptionally well preserved and privately owned castle which is not open to the public.

Originally a wooded hill overlooking the sea and situated at the confluence of two rivers this site dates from the Bronze Age and was in use in Roman times. The castle traces its history back to 488, when Aesc, the son of Hengist and the King of Kent, built a castle on the site. It was constructed as an Archbishop’s residence after the Norman invasion and was strengthened with a stone curtain wall in the 12th century. The interior buildings date from the 12th and 13th centuries and the large gatehouse was added in 1380. It was rendered uninhabitable in 1580 by an earthquake but was restored in the 19th century, since when the gatehouse has been used as a residence. The walls are still almost intact.
The link below is to the castle’s website which contains a brief history.

Our primary objective will be to dowse the Knights Chambers and the Undercroft.
